What Is a PMD File?

A PMD file is a page layout file made with Adobe PageMaker, which makes professional publications like newsletters and brochures. It can import images made in other Adobe products and has prepared text, photos, and drawn objects.

Adobe PageMaker’s development ceased in the spring of 2004. Adobe InDesign then replaced it. However, Adobe continues to maintain it. Adobe InDesign, which is the successor to PageMaker, can open PMD files as well. PageMaker was one of the first desktop publishing programs, released by Aldus in 1985 for the then-new Apple Macintosh and then for PCs running Windows 1.0 in 1987.

How to Convert PMD to PDF with Adobe?

There are two sorts of PMD to PDF conversion, each of which deals with a distinct type of document file export to PDF format.

There’s the PlanMaker PMD file and the PageMaker PMD file.

Before you can carry out any conversion, you’ll need to be able to open and read the PMD file. If the PMD file is a PlanMaker file, then you’ll need to install PlanMaker on your computer to open it.

Step 1: From the Adobe website, download and install Acrobat Distiller and Adobe PostScript. This operating system will require these add-ons to convert PMDs to PDFs. You should also install Adobe PageMaker if you don't already have it.

Step 2: Open the Adobe PageMaker application. Select “File,” then “Open.” Double-click on the PMD file you want to convert after searching for it.

Step 3: Click “File,” then “Export” while still on the page. Choose PDF from the drop-down menu, and a new window will appear, allowing you to select the sort of PDF you require: “Print” or “Onscreen.” Choose the print option if you want to print straight away. You can also choose the onscreen option to distribute the file over the internet, to another PC, or a mobile phone. Printing creates a larger file that takes up more storage space and isn't suited for sharing.

Step 4: If required, add some finishing touches to the file. You can use the PDF file to include hyperlinks, Doc information, and even security protocols. When you're finished, click “Export” and select a spot on your computer to save the document.

Another way to convert a PMD to a PDF file is to save the PMD file as an XPS file.

Open your PMD file with Adobe PageMaker or Adobe InDesign. Go to “File” and click “Print.” Or you can use the keyboard shortcut “CTRL + P.”

When prompted to pick a printer, select “Microsoft XPS Document Writer.”

Click ok, and the file will be saved as a .XPS. You can then use CocoDoc to convert from XPS to PDF or word, or any format you prefer.

How Do I Open a PMD File in Word?

If you have an old Office Document created with Adobe PageMaker 7, you may find it difficult to open it today. Although Adobe PageMaker 7 is one of the best publishing / DTP software available, few people still use it today.

However, there are times when you run across a file with a .pmd extension. Getting a PageMaker just to open the occasional PMD files isn’t cost-effective.

So, what will you do if you have no other choice? Here’s a small solution that works for almost all pmd files: Use Microsoft Office!

Here’s how to open a PMD file in word.

The first thing to do is to open Microsoft Word. Go to Office Menu and click on “Open.’’ You should see a drop-down menu titled “Files of Type,” click “Recover text from any file.” Select the PMD file you want to open in Word and click Open.

You can end up with a lot of unnecessary info in your paper or be unable to read it. If this occurs, try changing the font and deleting any unnecessary data because it will only appear before or after the document's content.
